Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Ride courier motorcycle
   • Motorcycle is started, steered, manoeuvred, positioned and stopped in accordance with traffic regulations, manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
   • Engine power is managed to ensure efficiency and performance and to minimise engine and gear damage
   • Driving hazards are identified and/or anticipated, and avoided or controlled through defensive driving
   • Motorcycle is parked, shut down and secured in accordance with manufacturer specifications, traffic regulations and workplace procedures
   • Motorcycles carrying dangerous goods are driven along designated routes in accordance with current Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code, relevant government regulations and workplace policies and procedures
   • Load is checked to confirm accordance with motorcycle load limit
   • Load is secured, transported and motorcycle is manoeuvred with due consideration to any required precautions related to load characteristics and/or relevant government regulations for special loads
   • Required signs or indicators are fixed to motorcycle
   • Personal protective equipment and clothing is identified, worn and adjusted to meet legislative, regulatory and policy requirements
2. Monitor traffic and road conditions
   • Most efficient route of travel is taken by monitoring and anticipating traffic flows and conditions, road standards and other factors likely to cause delays or route deviations
   • Traffic and road conditions are constantly monitored and acted on to enable safe operation and to ensure no injury to people or damage to property, equipment, loads and facilities
3. Monitor and maintain motorcycle performance
   • Motorcycle performance is maintained through pre-operational inspections and motorcycle checks
   • Performance and efficiency of motorcycle operation is monitored during use
   • Defective or irregular performance or malfunctions are reported to appropriate authority
   • Motorcycle records are maintained/updated and information is processed in accordance with workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures completing relevant documentation demonstrating low-risk riding behaviours monitoring performance of motorcycle and taking appropriate action reporting and/or rectifying identified problems, faults or malfunctions promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

factors that may cause traffic delays and diversions and related action that can be taken map reading and road navigation techniques motorcycle handling procedures motorcycling hazards and related defensive riding techniques pre-operational checks carried out on motorcycle and related action procedures and policies for identifying, accepting and carrying dangerous/hazardous goods relevant state/territory road traffic authority road rules, regulations, permit and licence requirements relevant WHS/OHS and environmental procedures and regulations workplace operational instructions.
